This short novel features a forbidden romance, blackmail and murder. The novel has a very limited list of characters, many of whom get fleshed out a bit, albeit limited.
The book is told from the perspective of Frank Chambers, a drifter who has been in several legal scruples in his brief past, who finds himself in a truck stop cafe along a highway in California being offered a job as a mechanic. It's when he meets his new employer's wife that things take a twist.
Overall the novel was an enjoyable experience, with several plot twists I didn't see coming. The ending comes a little abruptly, but it is still an interesting surprise and chock full of irony. The novel is brisk enough with not too much mystery that it makes sense why it was twice adapted into films.
